ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

Important dates: Abstracts due April 1, Manuscripts due July 1

The 21st Central Hardwood Forest Conference will be cohosted by Purdue University, Department of Forestry & Natural Resources, the Hardwood Tree Improvement & Regeneration Center (HTIRC) and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Dr. Mike Saunders is local program chair.

The meeting will be held at the Bloomington, Indiana Monroe Convention Center/Courtyard Marriott within walking distance of downtown. The conference will consist of a poster session, plenary talks, concurrent sessions, an evening banquet and an optional field tour on May 17.

Contributed Oral Presentations and Posters

Concurrent sessions in the conference could include focal areas in forest ecology, silviculture, fire ecology, climate change, emerging technologies, and forest management, all with emphasis on or application to forests within the Central Hardwood Region of the US. Oral presentations and posters will be selected based on a submitted abstract.

Titles are limited to 18 words and abstracts are limited to 250 words. Abstracts must be submitted by 5:00 pm Eastern on April 1, 2018. A notice of presentation acceptance or rejection will be received by April 15. We do not anticipate presentation time slot limitations. However, conference room availability is fixed and if limitations arise, some papers submitted for oral presentation may be accepted as poster presentations.

Oral presentations will be limited to 20 minutes followed by an additional 5 minutes for questions. Awards will be presented for the best oral and poster presentations by undergraduate and graduate students.

Publication Options

Presenters do not necessarily need to submit manuscripts for the conference proceedings. However, we strongly encourage authors of both poster and oral presentations to publish in one of three formats:

  1. Extended abstracts. These are limited to 1000 words and include up to two tables and/figures total. These will be printed as part of an electronic General Technical Report (eGTR) to be published in late 2019 or early 2020 by the Northern Research Station of the U.S. Forest Service.
  2. Short papers. These are limited to 3000 words and include up to eight tables and/or figures total. Authors will need to include two reviews by scientists knowledgeable in the subject area with the submission. These, too, will be printed as part of the eGTR.
  3. Journal articles. Full manuscripts can be submitted to Forest Science as a special issue associated with the conference. Manuscripts will be subject to Forest Science’s regular peer-review process.  The special issue is scheduled to be printed in early to mid-2019.

Submission deadline for all three options is July 1, 2018.  Authors should electronically submit extended abstracts or short papers to Janis Gosewehr (janisgos@purdue.edu); manuscripts should be submitted through the Forest Science online submission system (http://www.editorialmanager.com/forsci/default.aspx, please select CHFC21 special issue).  Email Mike Saunders (msaunder@purdue.edu) with questions.
